This sample application shows how to retrieve important information like area, length, centroid, perimeter and extent from map shapes.  To see this example in action select a shape from the shapes drop down box and watch the information be updated automatically.  This sample also shows the different choices offered for measurement.  To view the map shapes in a different unit of measurement, modify the length or area measurement types.
